about

SHARDS
Shards is the prologue and epilogue of Jerzy’s journey. Jerzy’s father Henryk (a policeman and veteran of the First World War) was arrested once the Polish Government went into exile. Jerzy and the rest of his family were later taken away and put on a train to a labour camp. The train carrying them was destroyed on route by a British air raid. Jerzy took this opportunity to escape, losing his family in the chaos. He ran across Europe and was eventually picked up by the Marquis in France. He was fourteen years old.

He joined the French Resistance and actively served with them until Overlord in 1944. Once the Allies had a foothold in Normandy, Jerzy served with the Free Polish Navy until the end of the war in Europe, demobbed in the North East of England and met a young woman called Sarah. He never saw his parents in person again.

Written correspondence warned him not to return to Poland under its Communist Government. He became an engineer in the Merchant Navy and travelled the world. He and Sadie had two children, Henry and Helen. To give them a chance, he changed his name from Jerzy Ocipinski to George Carson. He died on 25th December 2016. He ended his story very much in the manner he started it. Defiant.

lyrics

39 it all began
Those first few steps to where I stand
Fire lit snow, twisted steel made me
Tearful families, panic distorting
Driven onto crowded trains
No one spoke
No one dared complain
For years a child would learn to live
Skin flayed by the cold
A childhood lost
No flag
No home
It was joy to hear them fly
Tear the ground go screaming by
Doors open wide and I knew I’d survive
My child don’t look back
Get up and run
George listen I beg you
Hurry and run child run
Run just as fast as you can
Get away from the wreckage
Make for the trees
We’ll meet again
It’s a matter of time
44 we face the sea
To rest our eyes a victory
For one moment we hope to dream
How many lost souls learn to live tired and all alone?
No end in sight
No flag
No home
It was a joy they filled the sky
Hit the ground go screaming by
Arms open wide and I knew I’d survive
My child don’t look back
Get up and run
George listen I beg you
Hurry and run child run
Run just as fast as you can
Get away from the wreckage
Make for the trees
We’ll meet again
My child don’t look back
Get up and run
My child don’t look back
Get up and run
