THE FIREFLIES OF FALAISE
Inspired by the tank crews of the 1st Armoured who liberated the town of Potigny during the battle for the Falaise Pocket in 1944. Many Poles fled and resettled in Potigny after Poland’s occupation only to find themselves running again after France surrendered. It seems fitting that the Poles were the ones who helped take it back. Time and again the Poles are credited for their outstanding contributions to the Allied victory, yet were treated so poorly by those they fought for. They were so desperate to fight but had to do so under different flags. The 1st Armoured had to serve under the Canadians and Australians and were rarely allowed their own autonomy. 303 Squadron RAF made up of Poles and Czechs is famous for its contributions to winning the Battle of Britain, yet were treated very poorly by their English counterparts. At the end of the war, a survey was taken by the British public that showed that they overwhelmingly did not want the Poles to stay and supported repatriation back to Poland. Many of those who did return were persecuted, arrested and executed by the new communist government for what they did during the war. My grandfather was warned by his family not to return. So many people like my grandfather had to endure persecution by a British public to the point that they would change their names. The history of the Allied war effort is full of stories of men, women and children of all races and religions who fought to free a world that would continue to persecute and judge them to this day. We have much to be thankful for, but so much more to atone for.
